Program Categories

All submissions in all categories will be subject to review by the 2011 Convention Program Committee. For questions about 2011 Convention programs, please contact Kathleen Kerr or Kent Porterfield, 2011 Convention Program Co-Chairs. Program submissions for the 2011 Convention are due on Friday, September 10, 2010. Ancillary program requests are due Friday, November 19, 2010.

Pre-Convention Workshops
Pre-convention Workshops will be held Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27, 2011. Proposals are encouraged for half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) workshops on topics relevant to contemporary issues identified by the 2011 Convention Program Committee and the Professional Competencies.  Please note: These workshops are presented before the Convention begins and participants pay additional fees to attend them. Therefore, workshops with low registration may be canceled at the discretion of the Pre-Convention Workshop Coordinator. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made no later than March 5, 2011. Contact Elizabeth Whitt with questions about Pre-Convention Workshops.

General Convention Programs
These programs (75-minutes) are chosen in large part for their relevance to and incorporation of the contemporary issues identified by the 2011 Convention Program Team and/or the professional competencies. Contact Dwayne Todd with questions about General Convention Programs.

Convention Institutes

An Institute is a series of linked programs (typically 2 to 5) that provide Convention attendees with an intensive learning experience designed to promote a level of competence in a specific area. By linking consecutive or multiple program sessions (2½ to 6 hours total) with a common theme, presenters can explore a topic in more depth. Institute submissions should include a theme, conceptual framework, and individual program titles and abstracts. Program proposals must be clear about how many sessions are proposed, the focus of each one, and the connections between them. If an Institute is accepted, the coordinating presenter of the Institute will be contacted and required to submit additional information about each component of the Institute. Contact Larry Roper with questions about Convention Institutes.

Sponsored Programs

ACPA's structure includes Commissions that represent functional areas of issues pertinent to student affairs and Standing Committees that represent specific constituencies within our membership. Should a program be directly related to the work of one of the sponsoring groups, this should be indicated in the program proposal. If a proposal is not selected as a Sponsored Program (75-minutes), it will be considered for a General Program. Contact Judy Raper with questions about Sponsored Programs.

Co-sponsored Programs

If the proposal content is related to the work of more than one Commission or Standing Committee, the program proposal may be submitted for sponsorship to two Commissions, two Standing Committees, or one of each. The presenter can request that these groups consider the proposal for co-sponsorship. The two entities will review the program proposal and jointly select those which address their common concerns. If the proposal is not selected as a Co-sponsored program (75-minutes), it will be considered for a General Program. Contact Judy Raper with questions about Co-sponsored Programs.

Guidelines for Sponsors:

  • Commissions and Standing Committees will have five (5) sponsored program slots.
  • If co-sponsoring a program with another Commission or Standing Committee, that slot counts as 0.5 slot, but no Commission or Standing Committee can exceed a total of five (5) program slots.
  • All programs must be reviewed by members of the Commission or Standing Committee.
  • All programs not accepted by your group should be passed on to General Programs with your group's original evaluation.

Round Tables
The Round Table option (60-minutes, early morning or late afternoon) allows for in-depth discussion related to current events, developing trends, association matters, or topics related to functional areas or constituency issues. Round Table programs do not receive any type of audiovisual support, as these are meant to be discussions, not formal presentations. Contact Larry Roper with questions about Round Tables.

Sponsored Round Tables

Each Commission and Standing Committee will be able to sponsor a Round Table (60-minutes, early morning or late afternoon). This option allows for an in-depth discussion on a topic or issue that is of significance to the Commission or Standing Committee. Groups may request and may receive more than one Round Table, but is only guaranteed one slot. Contact Judy Raper with questions about Sponsored Programs.

Guidelines for Sponsors:

  • Commissions and Standing Committees will have one (1) Sponsored Round Table slot.
  • All Sponsored Round Tables must be reviewed by members of the Commission or Standing Committee.
  • All Sponsored Round Tables not accepted by your group should be passed on to General Programs with your group's original evaluation.

Promising Practices
Promising Practices is a special segment of the convention program that allows members to share strategies, programs, and interventions that have been successful on their particular campus. These programs will be assigned to 60-minute time slots in the early morning or late afternoon. The programs will be of interest to colleagues who are collecting information about institutional practices. Contact Lynn Willett or Haven Hart with questions about Promising Practices.

Research Papers
Research Papers is a program category that is designed for the presentation of scholarly research.  Each 75-minute program slot will include the presentation of three (3) research papers followed by a discussion of the research. Each paper will be allotted 15-20 minutes for presentation. Contact Lynn Willett or Haven Hart with questions about Research Papers.

Research Poster Sessions
The Poster Session category of the convention program provides a forum for discussion about research projects that have been completed or are in progress. Presenters will display their research on a bulletin board (provided by the Convention Team) and, during an assigned time slot, will be available to discuss their research with colleagues.  Contact Lynn Willett or Haven Hart with questions about Research Poster sessions.
