ACPA’s NextGeneration Institute, generally referred to as NextGen, will take place as a series of 3 live virtual webinars and other social connections between January and February 2021. 

About NextGen

NextGen is a unique opportunity for approximately 100 undergraduate students from across the world to learn about ACPA, graduate preparation, functional areas, and trends in Student Affairs and Higher Education. This Institute is an opportunity for the next generation of Student Affairs and Higher Education educators to meet and learn from current graduate preparation program faculty, NextGen alumni, and professionals with a variety of personal and professional experiences and identities from diverse institutional types and positions. Not only is NextGen a great way to learn more about Student Affairs as a profession, but it provides an opportunity to reflect on the intersection of your personal and professional identities so that you can begin identifying a meaningful career path for yourself.

NextGen Institute Sessions

The 2021 NextGen Institute curriculum will be delivered via three live 90-min webinar sessions with student affairs educators, including faculty and administrative leaders, with the following foci:

Intro to Student Affairs as a Field: What Does it Look Like Across Campuses?

Wednesday, 27 January at 7pm ET – 8:30pm ET

This webinar exposes students to the nuances of the student affairs profession, especially how it looks differently across institutional types. Presenters discuss what unites student affairs as a field, while at the same time exploring how the work of student affairs educators looks distinct at various campuses. 

Alternative Pathways into Student Affairs: Thinking within and Beyond an Student Affairs Degree

Wednesday, 10 February at 7pm ET – 8:30pm ET

This webinar examines how practitioners have entered the field without a “traditional” student affairs background. Attendees include those who did not or do not plan to pursue a master’s program in higher education and/or student affairs or those who had distinct undergraduate involvement experiences.

Different Journeys after the Student Affairs Degree: Attrition and Transferable Skills 

Wednesday, 24 February at 7pm ET – 8:30pm ET

This panel illustrates what led some student affairs educators to pursue careers beyond student affairs divisions or higher education institutions. Panelists articulate how they have transferred their student affairs experiences and skills  in different sectors.

Attendance at ACPA21 Convention: A Virtual Experience

This year’s Institute registration also includes full access to the entire ACPA21 Virtual Convention held 1-17 March 2021. ACPA21 is jam-packed with educational sessions, ​dynamic keynote speakers, and networking opportunities.

Register for NextGen & Apply for a NextGen Grant 

Registration for the entire NextGen 2021 Institute and the ACPA21 Convention is only $33 for undergraduate students. We encourage students to Apply for a NextGen Institute Grant

If you apply for a NextGen Institute Grant, we encourage you to process your registration for the NextGen Institute while your grant application is being reviewed. On Registration select “NextGen Participant Undergraduate Student”. On the next page select “Make Payment in Full” and “Continue” to the next page. On the dropdown menu for payment change the payment method from “Credit Card” to “SPECIAL.” This will allow your registration to be received without payment while your grant application is reviewed.
