  1. Visiting Houston provides the chance to try authentic Tex-Mex food. Xochi and Irma’s Original are close to the convention center. Irma’s Original is a James Beard Award winner and one of the top restaurants in Houston.
  2. The George R. Brown Convention Center and the surrounding area have all the essentials for convention attendees and The Shops at Houston Center offer a variety of dining, shopping, and other services.
  3. It will be Rodeo time in Houston during #ACPA18! The Rodeo includes a livestock show, midway, and concerts. It’s a unique Houston experience!
  4. There are a lot of great Cajun places in Houston, courtesy of the oil industry bringing people from Los Angeles to Texas. Try Zydeco Louisiana Diner near GRB.
  5. The Houston Rockets will be playing at home close to the convention center!
  6. If you like beer, there are a few places to try near the convention center. St. Arnold is the oldest craft brewery in the state and just a couple miles from GRB. 8th Wonder Brewery has a permanent food truck, with the design and food inspired by The Beastie Boys.
  7. Enjoy Buffalo Bayou Park, eat at the nearby restaurant, and see the Waugh Dr. Bat Colony at dusk. The bats were affected by the floods in fall 2017, but experiencing the colony is still a great way to witness how wildlife adapt to an urban environment. 
  8. A number of the museums in the Houston Museum District are FREE ALL THE TIME including Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and The Houston Center for Photography.
  9. Discovery Green offers great places to eat, relax, be active, socialize. There are several restaurants, places for families to hang out, and spaces for ACPA colleagues to connect and enjoy the Houston spring weather.  
  10. Admission is always free at The Menil Collection so that its art collections are accessible to everyone. The collection is a gift from the Menil family to the city of Houston, and has notable works from all over the world.
  11. Part of the Menil Collection, The Rothko Chapel’s mission is, in part, “to inspire people to action through art and contemplation, to nurture reverence for the highest aspirations of humanity, and to provide a forum for global concerns.” The Rothko Chapel sponsors speakers, concerts and other events that bring people together to explore spirituality and social justice and gives individuals an opportunity for contemplation. As this article from the New York Times says, “The Rothko Chapel is a lonely place. We need lonely places, but it helps to know that they’re lonely for everyone.”  
  12. Seven of the Houston Chronicle’s Top 100 restaurants are near GRB in the downtown area.

  16. Kolache can be sweet or savory. If you want to try them, Kolache Factory and Shipley Do-Nuts are the closest place to the GRB convention center.

  18. Folk art, recycling, and energy efficiency collide at the Beer Can House. One man spent decades covering his home in beer cans and it’s a sight to see!
