Standing committees represent various constituencies and interests of ACPA members. This event enables you to get to know members from various standing committees and learn about opportunities for involvement. You are welcome to attend more than one session. Leaders from the following standing committees look forward to meeting you : Standing Committee on Disability; Standing Committee on Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, and Transgender Awareness; Standing Committee on Men; Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs; and Standing Committee on Women. Members of the Standing Committee for Graduate Students and New Professionals will be available to meet you at the Convention Colleagues Program immediately following this program. | 4:00-5:30pm | Convention Colleagues Program: Establishing Your Relationship with ACPA First time at ACPA? Join us for a comprehensive orientation to ACPA and to the Annual Convention. We will introduce you to ACPA, cover the various components of the convention, and provide an opportunity to network with seasoned professionals in the organization. The orientation is sponsored by the Standing Committee for Graduate Students and New Professionals. |
| 6:00-8:00pm | Convention Opening Hyatt Regency-Centennial Ballroom Join in the celebration of the profession at the opening of the convention. Nikki Giovanni world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator is our speaker. As one of the most widely-read American poets, her focus is on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others. The Beacon Dance Company, based locally in Decatur, Goergia, will perform 1906/2006/2106, an engaging new two-section dance-theatre piece drawing inspiration from one of Atlanta's most notorious historical events. This thrilling new work reflects the strength, passion and tenacity of an oppressed group reaching for justice and their share of the American dream. Beacon Dance will wind up the opening session with "Teaching you/Teaching me", a celebration of ACPA's commitment to our work with students in higher education. During this interactive performance piece, the performers and Next Generation will lead us to the opening reception. |

The Standing Committee for Women and the Standing Committee on Multicultural Affairs will be celebrating their anniversaries, with a special tribute to commemorate their accomplishments. Take a souvenir home by stopping by the tattoo artist and photo button booths. |

| 3:00-5:00pm | Town Hall Assembly Meeting Your voice matters in ACPA; It is one of your association’s values. The Assembly, an enhancement under our new Governance structure, is designed to hear the voice of ACPA’s people and we welcome your involvement at this first-ever Convention Assembly. You will have an opportunity to learn about and provide input on ACPA’s strategic plan and current priorities. Join your elected leaders for this participatory town hall gathering. |

| 5:30-6:30pm | AIDS Memorial Hyatt Regency-Centennial Ballroom Listen to the ACPA AIDS Memorial Choir as we come together to celebrate life, reflect our losses, and support each other. This special convention tradition promotes an atmosphere of involvement and empowerment, as well as educating members about HIV/AIDS. |
| 8:00-11:00pm | Cultural Fest - 40th Anniversary Celebrations Join the Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs as they conclude the celebration of their 40th Anniversary and the many cultures represented at ACPA. The Plainsmen, a Native American dance troupe will open the festival with dancing and traditional songs of the southern plains, followed by lively performances by local talent and your ACPA colleagues as they share their heritage through the performing and visual arts. |
